Crunchy French Toast – Crushed cereal coated Hawaiian dinner rolls makes use of great leftovers, and a fun twist on French toast.
When I was growing up we had French Toast for breakfast on Christmas, and that was about it. Maybe if we went out, I would order it, but it wasn’t something we made on weekends. Now though, it is a staple. My son loves it, and anyway we have bread, it is always requested.
For this version, I used leftover Hawaiian dinner rolls, but you could use regular bread or even other dinner rolls work great too!

I first learned about crunchy French toast from a friend about 10 years ago. I am not sure if she saw it on a cooking show or in a cookbook. But basically after you dip the bread in the egg mixture, you press it into crushed cereal! It gives it such great texture, and makes it something extra special.
What You’ll Need
- Bread
- Eggs
- Milk
- Cinnamon
- Salt
- Sugar
- Crushed Cereal
- Non-Stick Spray/Butter
Pretty much your average French toast, plus the cereal! And then you can add whatever toppings you like.

How To Make Crunchy French Toast
- In a bowl you want to beat together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, salt, and sugar until it is really well combined.
- Crush your cereal and place it into a second bowl.
- Dip your bread or your dinner rolls (that have been cut in half) into the egg mixture and then press into the cereal until it is well coated.
- Place on a hot pan and let it cook for about 3 minutes a side.
- Remove from the heat and serve.
What Goes On French Toast
You can top with whatever you normally put on French toast, this isn’t any different!
- Maple Syrup
- Strawberry Syrup
- Fresh Berries
- Whipped Cream

What Bread To Use For Crunchy French Toast
Obviously for these, I used Kings Hawaiian dinner rolls that were leftover. This is great to use for any dinner rolls after the holidays when you have just a couple left. Just cut them in half and use them in this recipe! But any other sandwich bread you like. Texas Toast, White Bread, Brioche….literally any bread you have will work.
What Cereal Works For Crunchy French Toast
This is where you can get creative. You really just want something you would like the taste of and that has enough texture.
- Captain Crunch
- Corn Flakes
- Frosted Flakes
- Rice Krispies
