Cooking Instructions

  1. Prep Pork. Trim any excess hard fat from your pork loin. Place the in the bottom of your slow cookers
  2. Add Liquid. Pour the chicken broth over the pork loin.
  3. Season. Sprinkle a package of onion soup mix over the pork.
  4. Cook. Cover and cook on low for about 8 hours.
  5. Gravy. After the pork has cooked I like to take the liquid from the crockpot and prepare the gravy as the package says. But you can use the liquid and make your own gravy as well!
  6. Serve. Shred the pork and serve over mashed potatoes topped with gravy. Or you can serve in sandwiches, or alongside your favorite vegetables.

How Long To Cook Pork Roast In the Crock Pot

All crock pots are different and the newer ones seem to cook way faster than they used to. So it can take a little practice to get to know your slow cooker and come up with the perfect time.  For a 3-4 pound pork loin it takes approximately 8 hours on a low heat

If you are using a pork shoulder, I like to do closer to 10 hours to make sure it is really tender.  The shoulder is a little bit tougher and needs just a little bit more time to really break down and become delicious.  If you have an Instant Pot, check out Instant Pot Pulled Pork for an amazing recipe.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • Pork Roast Size. As written, this recipe is for a 3-4 pound pork loin roast. You can absolutely use a large roast, you will not need more liquid. If you have a very large roast, I like to cut it in half so the outside doesn’t get cooked before the center is done and dry out.
  • Cook On Low. For the best results I cook the pork on low. The higher the temperature the faster it is going to cook, but for tender pork you want low and slow so it stays juicy and tender.
  • Trimming Fat. You will want to trim any excess hard fat that might be on your pork. But you don’t want to remove it all. Fat keeps the pork moist as it cooks, so make sure you only trim the excessive amounts.

A crock pot pork roast can be great for entertaining or just a quick weeknight meal. I love being able to make crock pot recipes on busy days. I can just add everything in the morning and then when we are home and ready, dinner is waiting for us!

  1. Packet of onion soup mix – or you can make your own! I want to use my own homemade onion soup mix. How much do I use a fourth of a cup a half a cup etc etc hope to hear from you? I need to keep it low sodium and gluten free. Thank you very much for the recipe and your time.

Whole family enjoyed! Including my husband who doesn’t like pulled pork and my 5 year old picky eater! How would you recommend storing leftovers in the fridge and freezer? In the juices or drain and store separately?

    1. I would store in the juices (to help it from drying out) in an airtight container in the fridge. So glad your family enjoyed it!

      1. This was my thought exactly. Just wasn’t sure if the meat would then turn mushy as it was so tender already!

  4. I forgot to grab chicken stock at the store but I have chicken broth on hand. Will this be as flavorful and work the same?

I just got this cooking in my slow cooker and I know it’s going to taste fantastic. I did however lightly season the pork roast with some kosher salt, black pepper and garlic powder and let it marinate overnight in the refrigerator. I poured the chicken broth over the pork roast and I did add 1 extra cup of low sodium chicken broth because I’m doubling my pork gravy and also added 1 teaspoon dried thyme with the onion soup mix on top of the pork roast. I’m serving this with sweet carrots and loaded cauliflower mash.
