shaggy dough in a mixing bowl

How To Make Slow Cooker Bread

  • Bloom Yeast. In a 2 cup measuring cup mix together the warm water, sugar and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it starts to foam up. This is the yeast being activated.
  • Mix. Add the yeast mixture to the flour, salt, and oil. Mix until it become a shaggy ball of dough.
  • Knead. Place the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for about 2 minutes until it forms a smooth ball. You can add more flour if necessary.
  • Slow Cooker. Cut a piece of parchment paper and place into the bottom of your crockpot. Place the ball of dough in the center. Place a tea towel over the top of the crockpot, and then cover with the lid.
  • Cook. Turn the crockpot on high and cook for 2 hours. You can test for doneness with a thermometer if desired, it should read 195-205º F internal temperature.
  • Finish. Using the parchment paper, carefully lift out the loaf of bread. If you want it browned on top, place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, keeping a careful eye on it.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • Browning. The slow cooker will not get the top of the loaf of bread brown. When you remove the lid it will be white. Place the loaf under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to get it nice and golden brown.
  • Flavor. This is a great base white bread recipe, but you really can add and dress this up a bunch of different ways! Add in fresh rosemary, sprinkle the top with salt, add garlic. You can really make this bread your own for what you want to serve it with.
  • Towel. You may be confused by covering your crockpot with a towel and then the lid, but this is a key step you don’t want to skip. The lid of the crockpot always gets a lot of condensation on it. You do not want that dripping down onto the bread and making it soggy. You want the crust to form.

Serving Suggestions

I love fresh bread and could really find any excuse to eat it. It goes with just about any soup. Chicken Noodle Soup on a cold night with a slice of bread is perfect. But you could even serve with Chicken Wild Rice Soup, Creamy Tomato Soup or Italian Meatball Soup as well.

It also works great for sandwiches like a Turkey Club or Air Fryer Grilled Cheese. And you can also use slices to make Garlic Bread! Or just have a slice toasted with butter for a delicious snack.

Storage

As with any bread, you want to make sure it is wrapped tightly or in an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out. It will last for 2-3 days at room temperature.

Freezing

You can absolutely freeze a loaf of this bread. I like to wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then either foil or place in a freezer safe bag to make sure it doesn’t get freezer burn. It will last for 1-2 months. Just thaw at room temperature.

    1. I think it could, but I haven’t tested it. I know gluten free flour and yeast can be a challenge, but this isn’t necessarily like a traditional crusty loaf, so it could work well.
