This Mai Tai recipe brings tropical paradise to your glass with a refreshing blend of light and dark rum, citrus juice, and orange liqueur. It’s fruity, vibrant, and perfect for summer parties, backyard barbecues, or relaxing by the pool.

When I think of sitting on the beach or by the pool on a tropical vacation there are a few drinks I think of.  Frozen Strawberry Margaritas are one of them and a Mai Tai drink is another.  There is just something about a fruity cocktail that screams vacation, warm weather, and the tropics.

  • Pineapple Juice
  • Orange Juice
  • Triple Sec – or any other orange liqueur
  • White Rum
  • Dark Rum
  • Simple Syrup
  • Grenadine – or you can use maraschino cherry juice

The list might seem a little long for a cocktail, but trust me it is worth it!  The two kinds of rum give it great flavor and keep it from not being too see.  The pineapple and orange juice make it tropical and refreshing.  And it is just the perfect drink to take you back to your vacation.

How to Make a Mai Tai

You want your drink to be nice and cold, so this is where a martini shaker comes in really handy.

  1. Measure Ingredients. Fill a shaker with lots of ice. Pour in all of the ingredients.
  2. Shake. Make sure the lid is on securely and shake! You want to shake for about 30 seconds. If you have a metal shaker, you want the outside to get cold and frosting.
  3. Pour. Pour over a glass filled with ice and then add a splash of grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom and give it that pretty pink color.
  4. Serve. Garnish with orange slices, a cherry or even a pineapple wedge if you have one.

  1. This cocktail is perfect for afternoons on the patio! I love this fruity and refreshing cocktail like this one.

  2. Ever notice that when you order a Mai Tai in a different place, it’s not the same drink you had at the last place. That’s because a lot of bartenders will mix some rum with a little sugar, add some fruit juice and …… presto, they call it a Mai Tai. Like most so-called Mai Tai’s, the only thing this recipe has in common with a Mai Tai is rum. And it doesn’t even have the correct rum for the cocktail. Martin and Rebecca Cate have written a book about exotic cocktails and Tiki “culture”. It’s called “Smuggler’s Cove” and it contains, without a doubt, the definitive Mai Tai recipe. There are specific ingredients that most people will not have in their home bar. However, I strongly suggest you make the investment; not only in the ingredients, but in the book as well. When you finally experience a properly crafted Mai Tai, you will not only agree with me, you will tell all your friends to do the same. Trust me on this one. You won’t be sorry.
PS – Erin, I hope I didn’t offend you. This is a very nice recipe for a rum punch. Thank you.

    1. 100% correct, this recipe is for rum punch. A Mai Tai is simply a sour cocktail using lime, rum as the spirit and orgeat (almond syrup) as the sweetener. Think Margarita made with rum
